How To Keep Track Of Credit Card Rewards Points

Posted on: 12 October 2015

One of the best ways for a company to get you to sign up for a credit card is to offer you a rewards program where you get offers, miles, or money back for each dollar that you spend. Unfortunately, every credit card company has their own rewards points system and it can be incredibly difficult for you to keep track of how many points you have on each card and how you can turn them into a reward that you actually want. Here are some ways to keep track of credit card rewards points and make the most of your spending.

1. Use an App

There are several different apps that are currently available that allow you to enter in all of your information for each credit card that you have a single time. Then, you simply log in with separate credentials to check how each of those cards that you have entered are doing in regard to rewards points. Many of these apps will also keep track of when you can turn in your points for money off and will give you advice about using some of your points to get points on other cards in order to achieve rewards more quickly.

In order to use this app correctly, you are going to go through the tedious work of entering in each credit card. Set aside time to do it and make sure that you update the app each time you get a new credit card.

2. Reduce the Points Down to a Single Goal

Next, consider reducing all of your point down to a single goal. For example, if you have credit cards at many different retailers and with different financial institutions, do the research to see if you can put all of your rewards points at each retailer and institution towards a single goal, such as getting miles at an airline or getting money towards your favorite store. By doing everything you can to go for one specific type of reward, you will be able to increase the chances that you will be able to transfer points over.

3. Consider Minimizing Account Usage

Finally, you are most likely to get rewards if you only use one or two different rewards programs regularly. Resist the temptation to open credit cards at different retailers and instead focus all of your efforts into a single card. This will help you ensure that you don't have orphan miles or points that you will never be able to turn into any rewards.
